What Healthcare IT Infrastructure in India Actually Has to Do

What You Already Know

You already know your uptime is measured in patient lives, not business hours. That the PACS server cannot be down when a stroke patient rolls in, and the radiologist needs the CT scan on screen in three minutes. That the infusion pump on Bed 12 is running an operating system nobody has patched since 2016, is connected to your network, and cannot be air-gapped because it reports to your nursing station in real time.

You know that your hospital's biggest cybersecurity gamble is not your admin network but your biomed one. That the MRI machine representing eight crore of capital cost runs on Windows XP Embedded, is unpatchable, and is the direct network path a ransomware attacker would take from your imaging bay to your HIS if the segmentation wasn't right. You know that healthcare became a global ransomware target in 2024 and hasn't stopped since.

You know that your NABH accreditation isn't a certificate on the wall. It's a rolling compliance regime with real information technology and information management chapters that your auditor walks through in every assessment cycle. That the DPDP Act 2023 treats every patient medical record as sensitive personal data, and your Data Protection Officer answers personally for every one of them.

What You Need

You need a partner who understands PACS is not storage but a clinical workflow. That HIS is not an application but the operational spine of a 400-bed hospital. That bed-side Wi-Fi is not coverage but a clinical requirement. That medical device segmentation is not networking but life-safety engineering.

That's the infrastructure Proactive Data Systems has been building for India's healthcare sector for over thirty years.

The Infrastructure. Built for a Sector Where Downtime Is a Patient Outcome.

IT Infrastructure Services Proactive Delivers for Indian Hospitals and Diagnostic Networks

Proactive delivers seven specific capabilities for Indian healthcare infrastructure.

Every Architecture, Tuned for the Sector.

The Six Architectures for Indian Hospitals and Diagnostic Networks

Each of Proactive's six architectures is delivered with healthcare-specific patterns.

Data Center

PACS-scale storage on Cisco UCS with NetApp or Pure. HIS and EHR backend infrastructure with sub-second RTO for Tier-0 clinical systems. Cohesity or Rubrik for backup and disaster recovery meeting NABH and clinical continuity expectations.

Cybersecurity

Biomed network isolation via IEC 80001-1. Cisco IoT Threat Defense for medical device visibility. Cisco Secure Firewall or Palo Alto NGFW at the enterprise-biomed boundary. Ransomware-hardened immutable backups for HIS, EHR, PACS, and LIS. 24/7 SOC coverage tuned to healthcare threat patterns.

Digital Workplace

Cisco Webex Calling for hospital administrative staff and consultation rooms. Ruggedised handsets and Wi-Fi calling for nursing staff and roving clinical teams. Meeting rooms designed for multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions, remote radiology reads, and telemedicine consultations.

Structured Cabling

Hospital-grade cabling that survives medical-grade cleaning agents and 24/7 utilisation. MRI-room cabling designed around Faraday-cage constraints. Nurse call station wiring integrated with the network. Data centre cabling to TIA-942 standard.

Managed Services

24/7 NOC with clinical incident-response protocols (a network incident during an active surgical procedure is not a P1 but a P0). Named Proactive CSMs who understand your hospital's clinical calendar, elective surgery schedule, and quarterly NABH review cycle. Proactive's 24/7 SOC operates from Bengaluru and Delhi NCR, both cities home to major hospital chains, enabling on-site response for Sev-1 clinical incidents within four hours across the two capitals.

Every Control Has a Chapter.

Compliance Mapping for Indian Hospitals and Diagnostic Networks

IEC 80001-1 is the international standard for risk management of IT networks that incorporate medical devices. It defines how hospitals treat the network itself as part of the medical device ecosystem, with formal risk management, change control, and responsibility agreements between IT, biomed engineering, and clinical operations. NABH IT and Information Management chapters are the information technology and information governance sections of India's National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH) and Healthcare Providers standard, against which every accredited hospital in India is assessed on a rolling three-year cycle.

Every architecture Proactive deploys in healthcare ships with a controls-mapping document that names the specific NABH chapter, DPDP Act obligation, IEC 80001-1 clause, or ABDM requirement each control addresses. Proactive maintains this mapping current with every NABH standards revision and DPDP Rules update. The full reference is available in the Proactive Clinical-Grade Wi-Fi Design Guide for Indian Hospitals, alongside worked examples for tertiary care hospitals and multi-site diagnostic networks.

Healthcare Infrastructure Outcomes From Proactive Engagements

Proactive's healthcare engagements have produced the following measured outcomes in the last four quarters.

Under 3 Seconds

CT and MRI scan retrieval time on refreshed PACS infrastructure at a tertiary care hospital chain in FY25. Down from 22 seconds on the prior generation storage.

99.98%

HIS uptime across 12 months at a 400-bed tertiary care hospital, measured against a 99.9% SLA, with no unplanned outage exceeding 15 minutes during clinical hours.

Zero

Medical device compromises in three years since biomed network segmentation and Cisco IoT Threat Defense were deployed across a South India cardiac care chain, despite five distinct ransomware attempts against the group's admin network in the same period.

“The NABH audit team spent forty percent less time on IT than the previous cycle. Our evidence pack was already in the format they wanted.”

FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS

01How Does Proactive Design Wi-Fi That Works in MRI Rooms and Radiology Bays?
MRI rooms are Faraday cages. Wi-Fi signal from outside the room does not enter, and signal from inside the room does not leave. Proactive designs bedside and radiologist-station Wi-Fi with dedicated in-room access points fed through purpose-designed cable pathways that respect the RF shielding envelope. In practice, this means Cisco Catalyst 9166 or Meraki MR56 access points with enclosure-mounted antennas at the shielded room boundary, plus wired handsets on the imaging console for clinical communication that must not depend on RF at all.
02How Do You Segment Biomed Devices From the Admin Network Without Breaking Clinical Workflow?
Proactive follows IEC 80001-1 risk management practice. Every medical device is discovered by Cisco IoT Threat Defense, classified by function (imaging, monitoring, infusion, dialysis, laboratory), and placed in a biomed VLAN or micro-segment with only the specific network paths its clinical function requires. Communication with the HIS and PACS continues through pre-approved paths inspected at a next-generation firewall. Clinical workflow is preserved; lateral movement from an infected admin endpoint to a biomed device is contained by design.
03Does Proactive Integrate With Our HIS or EHR (Epic, Cerner, GE Centricity, Bahmni, and Others)?
Yes. Proactive designs and operates the infrastructure that supports every major HIS and EHR platform used in Indian healthcare, including Epic, Cerner (Oracle Health), GE Centricity, Allscripts, and Indian HIS platforms (Bahmni, Suvarna, Insta HMS, Prognosis, Karkinos, KRSNAA). Proactive does not implement the HIS itself. Infrastructure is designed to support HIS uptime SLAs, HL7 FHIR interoperability, integration with LIS and PACS, and clinical continuity during upgrades.
04How Does Proactive Handle Ransomware Protection for PACS and HIS?
Prevention through biomed and HIS network segmentation, plus Cisco Secure Firewall or Palo Alto NGFW between admin and clinical networks. Detection through Cisco Cyber Vision or Cisco IoT Threat Defense for biomed anomalies, plus EDR (Cisco Secure Endpoint, CrowdStrike, Microsoft Defender) for staff endpoints. Recovery through immutable backups (Cohesity DataProtect, Rubrik) for HIS, EHR, PACS, and LIS with hospital-tier RTO. Pre-drafted clinical continuity runbooks tested twice a year with your Medical Superintendent's office and CISO.
05What Is Proactive's Approach to NABH IT and Information Management Chapter Compliance?
Proactive maintains a controls-mapping document showing how each infrastructure control satisfies specific NABH objective elements within the Information Management System chapter and adjacent IT controls. Evidence packs are formatted for the NABH assessor and refreshed ahead of every assessment cycle. Common gap remediation (log retention, access review documentation, backup verification records, incident response evidence) is included in the standard engagement.
06How Does Proactive Handle DPDP Act 2023 for Patient Health Data?
Patient health data is classified as sensitive personal data under DPDP Act 2023, with stricter consent, retention, and breach notification requirements than ordinary personal data. Proactive designs consent management infrastructure, breach notification workflow with 72-hour notification to the Data Protection Board of India, DPO evidence packs, and data subject request handling. Cross-border data flows for international referrals or teleradiology are documented against DPDP Rules and any applicable sectoral requirements.
07Can Proactive Support ABDM and ABHA Integration for Our Hospital?
Yes. For hospitals participating in the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, Proactive designs Health Facility Registry (HFR) and Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR) integration, ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) linking infrastructure, and Health Information Exchange (HIE) connectivity aligned to ABDM technical standards.
08What Is the Engagement Model for a Hospital Chain With Multiple Facilities?
Proactive engages at the group level with a chain-wide reference architecture, then localises per facility based on scale, clinical mix, and existing infrastructure. Multi-hospital chains typically start with a foundational architecture review across two or three flagship facilities, then roll out standardised infrastructure to remaining facilities on a hospital-by-hospital cadence timed to each facility's operational calendar and NABH cycle.
