What is Immersion Cooling?

Immersion cooling is a technique where servers and IT equipment are submerged in a thermally conductive, non-electrically conductive liquid to manage heat. This method removes heat more efficiently than traditional air or direct-to-chip cooling and supports dense, high-performance workloads. 

How Immersion Cooling Works 

In immersion cooling, hardware components like CPUs, GPUs, and memory modules are placed in a bath of dielectric fluid. This fluid absorbs heat directly from the surfaces of the components. The heated fluid then flows to a heat exchanger, where the heat is removed and the cooled fluid is circulated back. 

There are two common types: 

  •     Single-phase immersion: Fluid absorbs heat and is cooled without boiling 
  •     Two-phase immersion: Fluid boils at low temperature and condenses to transfer heat more efficiently 

Both offer low thermal resistance and eliminate the need for fans or air circulation.
