23 August 2025 was the last date Cisco could release a security fix for the Nexus 2248TP GE, 2348UPQ and 2348TQ fabric extenders. That was over a year ago. If these devices are in your data center, they have been forwarding your traffic with no possibility of a patch ever since, and the next date on the calendar closes the last remaining door: after 22 November 2026, no support contract for them can ever be renewed again.
At the time of writing, that deadline is just nine weeks away.
This is not a niche problem. Fabric extenders were the standard way to build top-of-rack connectivity through most of the 2010s, and any Indian data center built or expanded in that decade is likely to have them in volume. They sit quietly, they rarely fail, and precisely because they rarely fail, nobody looks at them. So racks across the country are wired through hardware that Cisco has formally scheduled for obsolescence, while the teams running them are busy with louder problems.
Here is what the notice actually says, what it means for your estate, and what to do in the time remaining.
Cisco's end-of-life notice EOL14471 covers the Nexus 2248TP GE, Nexus 2348UPQ 10GE and Nexus 2348TQ 10GE fabric extenders, together with their fans, power supplies and accessory kits. Sales ended in August 2022. Support ends completely on 31 August 2027. Separate Cisco notices cover other Nexus 2000 models, so an estate free of these three units is not necessarily in the clear.
If your racks were built between roughly 2014 and 2021, there is a fair chance some of these part numbers are in them. The affected list runs to dozens of SKUs, including the common N2248TP-E and N2348TQ-E bundles in both airflow directions.
The dates that matter, from Cisco's notice:

Read that third row again. The security deadline is not approaching. It has passed. A vulnerability discovered in these platforms today will not be fixed, whatever contract you hold.
22 November 2026 is the last date on which any support contract for these fabric extenders can be renewed or reinstated; a contract that lapses after that date can never be brought back. An estate whose cover expires in December runs unsupported until the hardware is replaced: no TAC case, no advance replacement, no spares commitment. For a production data center, that is an unpriced risk sitting under every connected workload.
There is a trap inside this date, too. Even a renewal signed in time buys cover only until 31 August 2027, when support ends for good. So the decision in front of you is not "renew or replace". It is "replace now, or pay for a few more months of cover and then replace anyway". For most estates, that arithmetic favours starting the refresh now and using the remaining contract as the safety net while the migration runs.
Consider a typical mid-sized case. A Pune manufacturer with six racks of 2348TQ extenders discovers the notice in October. Procurement, board approval, delivery and a safe change window will not all fit before 22 November. Their sensible move is to renew what they can in the days remaining and immediately begin the migration, so the 2027 cliff arrives after the last FEX is out, not before the first one is.
Three, in rising order of severity. First, operational: without support or replacement hardware, a failed unit strands every server connected to it for as long as sourcing a grey-market spare takes. Second, security: these devices sit inside your fabric with no patches available, an increasingly attractive fact to attackers who read end-of-life notices too. Third, compliance: auditors and regulators now routinely ask about unsupported infrastructure, and under India's DPDP regime the "reasonable security safeguards" test becomes uncomfortable when the answer includes network hardware that its own manufacturer will not fix.
None of this shows up in a monitoring dashboard. The device reports green until the day it does not.
There is no new FEX. Cisco's own migration table points every affected bundle at a Nexus 9300 series switch, which tells you something bigger than a part number: the fabric-extender architecture itself is being retired. The replacement is a proper switch at the top of the rack, not a remote line card.

The move is an upgrade in disguise. Each replacement runs a current NX-OS, supports modern telemetry and automation, carries far more bandwidth than the extender it displaces, and gives every rack its own control plane. Budget-wise it is a switching refresh, not a like-for-like swap, and it should be planned as one.
Rack by rack, not big bang. The practical sequence: inventory first, so you know every affected serial and what depends on it; classify by criticality, so the racks carrying production databases move in planned windows and the test racks move first as rehearsal; then migrate in waves, using dual-homed servers to drain traffic to one leg while the other is replaced.
Two design points deserve attention before any hardware is ordered. Where the parent Nexus 5000 or 7000 switches are themselves near end-of-life, replacing FEXes under them merely moves the problem, and the design should consider the whole fabric. And the new 9300s do not require you to change anything else: they operate in existing NX-OS environments and coexist with whatever else runs in your data center, whichever vendor's badge it wears. A refresh forced by one product's retirement is not an obligation to re-architect everything at once.
