Stacking looks simple until a switch refuses to join the ring, and it's almost always a rule you didn't know you'd broken. Here are the limits, and the mixing and licensing rules that trip people up.
Up to eight, with physical StackWise. Catalyst 9200 and 9300 switches stack up to eight members into one logical switch through their dedicated StackWise ports. Catalyst 9500 and 9600 use a different method, StackWise Virtual, which joins just two switches over uplinks. Every member of a stack must be the same model family, running the same licence level and software version.
That's the headline. The detail is where deployments succeed or fail.

The eight-member limit is consistent across the physical-stacking platforms (Cisco Catalyst 9300 stacking guide). The catch is not the number; it's what you're allowed to put in the ring.
Three rules decide whether a stack forms. Break any one and a switch stays out.
Maximum eight members on physical StackWise. Every switch must run the same IOS XE software version. And every switch must run the same licence level, Essentials with Essentials, Advantage with Advantage.
The software-version and licence-level rules are the ones engineers hit most. A switch on a different firmware release, or a different licence tier, will not join the stack, even if it's the right model. Align the version and the licence first, and most stacking problems disappear.
Only within tight limits, and this is where the desc's warning lives. You cannot mix a 9200 with a 9200L, because their backplane architectures differ. You cannot mix a 9300 with a 9300L, for the same reason, and the 9300L needs an external stack kit while the standard 9300 has built-in ports.
There is one useful exception. A Catalyst 9300 and a 9300X can stack together, but the whole ring runs at the speed of the slowest member, so mixing a 1T-capable 9300X into a StackWise-480 stack means you lose the 1T advantage across the stack.
And you cannot stack across series at all, no 9200 in a 9300 stack. Same family, same StackWise type, is the safe rule.
Yes. Every switch in a stack must run the same licence level as well as the same software version. A stack shares one control plane, and it operates at a single, common licence tier, so mixing Essentials and Advantage members is not supported.
Practically, that means you plan the licence at the stack level, not the switch level. Order the whole stack at the tier the stack needs, and keep every member on the same release, so the ring forms cleanly and stays consistent.
A different thing, for a different layer. StackWise Virtual joins two switches, not eight, into one logical unit, and it does so over standard uplinks rather than dedicated stack ports. It's used on the Catalyst 9500 and 9600 core and aggregation platforms to give a redundant, single-logical core from a pair of switches.
It has its own rules. Both switches must run the same licence level, the same software version and the same SDM template, and StackWise Virtual requires at least a Network Advantage licence (Cisco StackWise Virtual).
So if the question is "how many can I stack", the answer depends on the layer: up to eight access switches with physical StackWise, or two core switches with StackWise Virtual.
Stacking rules are easy to get wrong on paper and expensive to fix in a rack, the wrong model mix, a mismatched licence tier, an odd firmware release. Getting the design right before the order is the cheap moment to do it.
