What Is

What is IPv6?

IPv6 is the latest version of the Internet Protocol. It was created to replace IPv4, which has run out of usable addresses. IPv6 provides a much larger address space and supports the growth of internet-connected devices across homes, offices, factories, and cities.

Why IPv6 Replaces IPv4

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses, which limits it to about 4.3 billion unique IPs. That number was exhausted years ago due to the explosion of smartphones, cloud services, and IoT systems.

IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses. This expands the pool to over 340 undecillion IPs. Every device, application, and user can now have a globally unique address, making the internet more scalable and future-ready.

What Makes IPv6 Different

IPv6 improves routing, removes the need for NAT in most cases, and supports auto-configuration of devices. It also includes mandatory support for IPsec, helping organizations improve end-to-end network security.

With IPv6, networks can operate more efficiently, with fewer configuration errors and better performance for cloud-native and mobile applications.

IPv6 in Indian Networks

India is one of the global leaders in IPv6 adoption for mobile networks. Telecom providers and ISPs already serve a large percentage of users over IPv6. Enterprises are gradually following, especially in sectors planning for IoT, smart infrastructure, and long-term cloud use.

Government bodies have also started requiring IPv6 support in public systems and vendor procurements.

How Proactive Supports the Shift

Migrating to IPv6 involves more than enabling a new setting. You need to assess your infrastructure, test compatibility across systems, and run dual-stack environments in most cases. Proactive helps you design a transition that works in real-world conditions without breaking your current services.

We audit your setup, plan the migration, and ensure your security, monitoring, and compliance tools support IPv6 from day one.

Final Word

IPv6 is the foundation of scalable, secure networking going forward. If your network is still running only on IPv4, it is time to plan the shift. Proactive can help you make it smooth and future-ready.
