What is MPLS?

MPLS, or Multiprotocol Label Switching, is a routing technique used in enterprise and service provider networks to move data efficiently. It creates predetermined, high-performance paths for data packets based on short labels, not long network addresses. 

How MPLS Works 

In a traditional IP network, each router makes an independent decision about where to send each packet. MPLS simplifies this by assigning labels to packets and directing them along a fixed path called a Label-Switched Path (LSP). This reduces the need for complex lookups at every hop. 

The result is faster, more reliable traffic forwarding, with support for Quality of Service (QoS). MPLS is often used to prioritize voice, video, and business-critical applications. 

Why Enterprises Use MPLS 

MPLS offers consistent performance and predictable latency. That makes it a popular choice for connecting branch offices, data centers, and remote sites, especially when reliability is more important than cost. 

It supports traffic engineering, making it easier to avoid congestion. It also enables Layer 3 VPNs for secure site-to-site communication across shared infrastructure. 

MPLS in India 

Many Indian enterprises use MPLS as part of their wide area network. It’s a common offering from telecom service providers and is especially prevalent in BFSI, IT services, and government networks where uptime and SLAs are critical. 

However, with the rise of SD-WAN and cloud-first strategies, some organizations are shifting away from MPLS to more flexible options. That said, MPLS remains a reliable backbone for high-priority and latency-sensitive traffic.
