What Is

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malware that locks or encrypts your data and demands payment to restore access. Attackers usually ask for money in cryptocurrency and often set a deadline. If you do not pay, they may delete your files or leak sensitive information.

How Ransomware Works

It usually starts with a phishing email, a malicious attachment, or a fake software update. Once a user clicks or downloads the file, the malware installs quietly. It searches for critical files, encrypts them, and shows a ransom message. Some variants also steal data before encryption.

There are different forms of ransomware. Some just lock the screen. Others encrypt files across your network. Some attackers threaten to publish your data if you refuse to pay. This is known as double extortion.

Why It Keeps Growing

Ransomware works because it is simple and profitable. Attackers often use ready-made kits sold on the dark web. This makes it easy even for small groups to target large networks. Victims range from individuals and small businesses to hospitals and critical infrastructure.

Most attackers target systems with weak security, outdated software, or open remote access. Once inside, they can move laterally, infect backups, and disrupt business for days.

Ransomware in India

India has seen a sharp rise in ransomware attacks across sectors. BFSI, healthcare, education, and manufacturing have all been hit. Many companies do not report incidents, but industry data shows a steady increase in volume and impact.

Smaller firms are especially vulnerable. They often lack dedicated security teams or backup strategies. Large enterprises, on the other hand, struggle with detecting threats that move across cloud and on-prem environments.

How Proactive Helps

Proactive helps you build a layered defence against ransomware. We assess your attack surface, harden your endpoints, and monitor for early signs of compromise. Our solutions include secure backup, endpoint detection, identity protection, and access control. We also deploy Cisco XDR, Duo, and Secure Firewall solutions as part of a broader security strategy.

Final Word

Ransomware is not going away. But with the right planning, tools, and response process, you can reduce its risk and impact. Proactive can help you build a defence that works in real conditions, not just in theory.
