24-Port or 48-Port Switch: How Many Ports Does Your Office Need?

Buying a switch for the office looks like a simple choice: 24 ports or 48. It's simple until you undersize it and run out of ports in a year, or oversize it and pay for capacity that sits dark, or, most common of all, buy a 48-port PoE switch that can't actually power 48 devices. 

Here's how to size the access layer properly, in plain terms. 

24-Port or 48-Port: Which Do You Need? 

Count devices, not desks. A 24-port switch suits a small office, a floor of up to roughly 20 users, or a segmented area; a 48-port switch suits a denser floor with more devices and costs less per port. Add about 25 to 30 per cent spare ports for growth, and separately check the switch's PoE budget, because port count is not the same as power capacity. 

That last point catches more people than any other, so we'll come back to it. First, the counting. 

How Many Switch Ports Do You Actually Need? 

Don't match ports to desks; count the actual devices that plug in. In a modern office that's more than one per person. Walk the floor and tally by type:

The common shortcut is to remember that many IP phones let the PC plug into the back of the phone, so a desk with a phone and a PC often needs just one switch port, not two. But access points, cameras and printers each need their own port, and those add up quietly. 

Total the devices, add the headroom, reserve a couple of ports for the uplink, and you have your real number. Then choose 24 or 48 to cover it comfortably, aiming to fill around 70 to 75 per cent so you've room to grow over the next year or two. 

When Should You Choose a 24-Port Switch? 

For smaller or divided spaces. A 24-port switch is right for an office or floor of up to about 20 users, for a branch, or for a segmented area where you want the network broken into smaller pieces. It's also the better choice where you want redundancy or distributed power, two 24-port switches instead of one 48, so a single switch failure takes down half the floor rather than all of it. 

If your device count lands well under 24 with headroom, don't buy a 48 "to be safe". You'll pay for ports you never light. 

When Should You Choose a 48-Port Switch? 

For denser floors. When a floor has forty-plus devices once you've counted properly, a 48-port switch is usually the right call: it costs less per port than two 24s, needs only one uplink and one device to manage, and keeps the wiring closet tidier. 

The trade-off is concentration. One 48-port switch is a single point of failure for everything on it, and, as the next section warns, its PoE budget has to stretch across far more ports. 

Don't Confuse Port Count With PoE Budget 

This is the mistake that bites real deployments. A 48-port PoE switch does not deliver full power on all 48 ports at once. Every powered device, phone, access point, camera, draws from a shared total PoE budget, and that budget runs out long before the ports do. 

The numbers are sobering. A switch with a 370-watt PoE budget powers only about twelve full 30-watt PoE+ access points, not forty-eight (PoE budget planning). So a 48-port switch feeding a floor of power-hungry APs can run out of watts with most of its ports still empty. 

Size the power separately from the ports. List every powered device, add up its real draw, add about 20 per cent headroom, and check that total against the switch's usable PoE budget, not its port count. Sometimes the honest answer is two 24-port PoE switches, or a switch with a bigger power supply, precisely because one 48-port unit can't power the load. 

One 48-Port Switch, or Two 24s? 

It depends on what you're optimising for. One 48-port switch is cheaper per port, uses fewer uplinks and is simpler to manage, good for a straightforward, dense floor. Two 24-port switches cost a little more and use more uplinks, but they give you redundancy, spread the PoE load across two power supplies, and let you segment the network more easily. 

For a small office where cost and simplicity lead, the single 48 usually wins. Where uptime matters or you're powering a lot of devices, two 24s often make more sense than the headline price suggests.
