India's grey market makes this a real question, not a paranoid one. A switch that arrives at a third of the price, with a serial that Cisco TAC later refuses, is an expensive lesson nobody wants twice. Here's how to check a Cisco switch is genuine before you pay, and the red flags that give a fake away.
Check the serial number and product ID against Cisco's records, confirm they match the chassis label, the carton and the switch's own CLI, and confirm the device has a valid warranty and isn't already registered to someone else. Inspect the labels for defects. No single check is enough, so layer them, and buy from an authorised partner to avoid the problem in the first place.

Step 1: Check the Serial Number on Cisco's Tool
Start with Cisco's own Device Coverage Checker at cway.cisco.com/sncheck. Enter the serial number, and it returns the product ID, the warranty status and the coverage and contract details.
Two things to confirm. If the serial is valid and returns the expected product ID, a fake or re-marked serial often won't. It shows a genuine warranty status rather than "already covered" under a contract belonging to another company, which signals used or diverted stock.
A serial that Cisco doesn't recognise, or that's registered to someone else, is a stop sign.
Step 2: Match the Serial Across Label, Carton and CLI
A genuine switch tells the same story everywhere. The serial number on the chassis label, on the shipping carton, and in the switch's own software, via the show inventory and show version commands, must all match exactly.
Counterfeiters re-mark labels, but can't always align every layer. So a serial that reads one thing on the sticker and another in the CLI is a strong counterfeit signal. This cross-check catches fakes that pass a simple label glance.
Step 3: Claim It Into Your Smart Account
Registering the device and its licence into your own Cisco Smart Account is both good practice and a check. If the serial is already claimed by another organisation, or the licence won't register cleanly, you're looking at used, diverted or counterfeit hardware, not the new switch you paid for.

Step 4: Inspect the Labels and Hardware
Counterfeits give themselves away physically. Look for label defects: misaligned text, character substitution such as a zero used in place of the letter O, fuzzy printing, weak adhesion, or port numbers printed in the wrong colour. Genuine Cisco labels are clean and consistent.
If you can see inside, any unauthorised add-on board or wire jumper on the circuit board is a serious warning; those modifications can alter how the device reports its identity and bypass licence checks (Cisco counterfeit detection field notice). And one behavioural tell: some counterfeits become inoperable after a genuine Cisco software upgrade.

One flag warrants a closer look. Two or more, walk away.
Both are problems, for different reasons. A counterfeit is fake hardware, forged to look like Cisco, with no genuine components, no valid licence and real security risk. Grey-market equipment is genuine Cisco that's been diverted through unauthorised channels, so it's real, but it may carry no India warranty, no support entitlement and no transferable licence.
You don't want either. A counterfeit can compromise your network; grey stock leaves you unsupported and non-compliant. The verification steps above catch both, because both fail the serial, warranty and provenance checks a genuine, authorised purchase passes.
