Cisco Duo has three licensing tiers. Essentials covers basic MFA and SSO. Advantage adds device trust and adaptive authentication. Premier adds zero trust network access through Duo Network Gateway.
Each tier includes everything in the one below it.
Duo Essentials is the base tier. It includes multi-factor authentication, single sign-on, FIDO2 support, Verified Push, and passwordless authentication. It satisfies the core MFA requirement under CERT-In CISG-2025-02 and RBI Authentication Directions 2025.
Duo Advantage adds device trust and adaptive authentication. Device trust checks endpoint health before granting access: operating system version, encryption status, screen lock, and whether the device is managed. Adaptive authentication adjusts the authentication requirement based on risk signals including location, device posture, and anomalous behaviour. For Indian enterprises with privileged access audit requirements under SEBI CSCRF, Duo Advantage is typically the appropriate starting point.
Duo Premier adds Duo Network Gateway. This enables zero trust network access: users connect to applications directly through Duo without a traditional VPN. It is relevant for organisations actively replacing legacy VPN infrastructure or implementing a zero trust architecture.
For most Indian enterprise deployments, Duo Advantage satisfies the full compliance requirement set: CERT-In log retention, RBI factor requirements, and device trust for privileged access. Duo Essentials suits straightforward environments without privileged access audit requirements. Duo Premier is appropriate when zero trust network access is the objective.
All three tiers operate through Cisco Duo's Mumbai data centre for Indian tenants, confirming India data residency.
Proactive Data Systems, a Cisco Preferred Seurity Partner, can assess which Duo tier is appropriate for a specific environment and compliance requirement.
