How Does Cisco Duo Compare to Microsoft Authenticator?

Cisco Duo and Microsoft Authenticator are both capable MFA platforms. The right choice depends on one factor: how much of the environment is Microsoft. 

Microsoft Authenticator is tightly integrated with the Microsoft ecosystem. It works seamlessly with Azure Active Directory, Microsoft 365, Intune, and Conditional Access policies. For organisations running an entirely Microsoft environment, it is a logical and cost-effective choice. It is included in several Microsoft 365 licensing tiers. 

Cisco Duo is infrastructure-agnostic. It integrates via RADIUS with legacy VPN concentrators, on-premises Active Directory, Linux systems, on-premises ERP, and OT environments including SCADA and MES platforms. It does not require Azure AD or any Microsoft component to function. 

For Indian enterprises, this distinction is practical. Most mid-market and enterprise environments in India are not entirely Microsoft. They carry legacy VPNs, on-premises applications, and in manufacturing and healthcare, systems that predate modern authentication protocols entirely. Microsoft Authenticator does not have a RADIUS-based Authentication Proxy. Cisco Duo does. 

There are three additional India-specific considerations. 

Data residency. Cisco Duo operates a dedicated Mumbai data centre. Microsoft Authenticator authentication data for Indian tenants is processed through Microsoft's Asia-Pacific infrastructure. For organisations with strict CERT-In log residency requirements, this distinction requires verification with Microsoft directly. 

Regulatory log format. Both platforms generate authentication logs. Cisco Duo's log structure is well-documented for RBI and CERT-In evidence packages. Microsoft's log architecture requires additional configuration for equivalent granularity. 

Licensing. Microsoft Authenticator is included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium and above. Cisco Duo is a separate subscription. For organisations already paying for qualifying Microsoft licences, the cost differential is a legitimate factor in the evaluation. 

For a mixed-vendor Indian enterprise environment, Cisco Duo has a practical integration advantage. For a Microsoft-first environment, Authenticator is worth evaluating before adding a separate platform.
